Neil Rockind Saves A Life In Federal Court Today

Neil Rockind, noted criminal defense trial lawyer, saved a client in federal court today.  Literally saved someone… Our client, who we have been representing for nearly four (4) years, appeared in federal court for sentencing today.  The United States Sentencing Guidelines called for a sentence between 97  and 121 months, i.e., 10 years in prison.  The government sought a sentence of at least five (5) years, i.e., 60 months.  Rockind pushed on however … he crawled into his client’s mind, found the feelings and emotion that drove the client to commit the crime, hired an expert to explain the phenomenon and argued that the sentencing guidelines were not deserving of attention in a 54 page sentencing memorandum.  Despite the guidelines, recommendation and facts, the judge sentenced our client to a eighteen months in prison.  While no one wants to serve a prison sentence, considering the fact that the guidelines called for a decades worth of incarceration, 18 months pales in comparison. The client and his family left court today knowing that they had been given a second lease on life.
