It is a felony, punishable by life imprisonment, in MI for any person to cause great bodily injury, serve mental pain, or suffering upon another person in his or her custody. MCL 750.85.

Under the Torture statute the following definitions are given:

(1) Custody: means the forcible restriction of a person’s movements or forcible confinement.

(2) Great Bodily Injury: serious impairment of a body function, internal injury, poisoning, serious burn or scalding, severe puncture wounds

(3) Severe Mental Pain/Suffering: is a mental injury that results in a substantial alteration of mental functioning that is manifested in a visibly demonstrable manner and is caused by the intentional infliction of great bodily injury.
