In Michigan it is a felony offense, punishable by no more than 5 years imprisonment, for any one to willfully and without permission drive away or participate in the taking and driving away of any motor vehicle that belongs to another person. Motor vehicles include all vehicles that are mechanically powered and driven on public highways. MCL 750. 413.

However, it is a misdemeanor offense, punishable by no more than 2 years imprisonment or a fine of no more than $1,500.00, for anyone to take a vehicle without permission but without the intent to steal it. MCL 750.414.
